Factors Deciding Hair Transplant Cost

Hairloss and progressive baldness are not just physical cosmetic problems but they also have a lot of psychological and emotional impact. While plenty of products promise to help you grow your hair – a majority of them are not really effective and fail to produce the desired results. Also one of the most common causes of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia which is a progressive condition. Consequently, an increasing number of people are opting for hair transplantation surgery in order to get a perfect hairline and good coverage. However, the most important question people often ask is the cost involved in the hair transplantation method, which may sometimes become a limiting factor for many patients.

The cost of a hair transplant varies and depends on several important factors. These include:

The number of grafts:

The required number of grafts is determined once you undergo the initial consultation with your doctor where he will evaluate your scalp and overall health condition. The number of grafts is decided by the present grade of baldness, expected density and coverage, type of hair, the progression of disease, age of the patient and finally patient’s expectations. If the area to be covered is large, usually more grafts are required to fulfill the implantation goal. It influences the cost of the procedure.

The techniques used during transplant:

There are 2 primary techniques used in hair transplantation surgery, namely the FUE and FUT. Both the techniques involve different methods and limitations that affect the cost of the procedure. In advanced grade of baldness, the surgeon may choose to combine both the techniques to procure more number of grafts. This can increase the overall cost of the surgery.

The surgeon:

Senior surgeons with more experience often charge higher than the ones who are less established. However, higher charges do not always indicate a promising outcome. It is imperative to research and find out the best and most experienced surgeon in the town. Ideally you should select a surgeon who is equally skilled in all the techniques of transplant and should be compassionate enough to keep your interests above his financial gains.

Donor Area:

In a hair transplant procedure, the hair follicles are extracted from the back of the head. However, if you do not have adequate density of  hair follicles at the back side of your head, surgeons extract hair from other body parts as well. It is a lengthy and technically advanced procedure which needs a lot of skill and is quite a challenging task. As a result, the type of donor area used in the surgery also influence the hair transplantation cost

Location:

In places, like in metropolitan cities, where the cost of living is high, the hair transplantation treatment cost is also high. Surgeons in those areas are more likely to charge a higher price for the surgery.

Some clinics offer payment plans and finance options to help spread the cost of treatment over a few instalments.

However, it’s important to understand that the cost of transplant is never directly proportional to the quality and final results of the transplant. Hence, the cost of transplant, though an important factor, should never be the sole criteria to finalise your transplant centre and the operating surgeon.
